The Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival is the oldest oyster festival in the world. It is also one of Europe’s longest-running food festivals. This year it is running from 28th – 30th of September 2018.
Irish Food Festival
Over the last 63 years, the Irish food festival has grown strength to strength, starting with 34 guests to now having over 25,000 during the three day event. For anyone who would like to be part of the Irish and World Oyster Opening or ‘shucking’ Championships then they are also held during the Irish food festival, as well as top class entertainment, street parades, seafood trails, celebrated hospitality, the start of many new friendships, flowing champagne and of course, rich, creamy Irish stout’’. Galway Oyster Festival was described best by the Sunday Times, when they said its “one of the 12 greatest shows on earth” and the AA Travel Guide has also listed this festival as one of Europe’s Seven Best Festivals.
Galway Oyster Festival Schedule
This festival takes place over three days.
The opening night will see contestants compete in the National Oyster Opening Championships followed by music that will play into the early hours. Day two, the streets are alive with parades, lights, and music. The medieval city becomes a festival fit for kings as they make their way to the festival marquee. There will be plenty of noise, colour and excitement for all to enjoy.
The final day of festivities is a family day catering for adults and children alike. In the Festival Marquee there will be music played by the best musicians in Ireland. There will also be live cooking demos throughout the day.
